Meet Your Neighbor: Matthew Oboikovitz

Matthew Oboikovitz is a dentist and owner over at Maple Grove Dentist in west Madison. Matt asked him some questions to get to know him better — as a dentist, local business owner (right down on Maple Grove and McKee), and as Matt's west side neighbor!

Tell us about who you are & how you ended up in Fitchburg?

I grew up in the Wausau area which is about two hours north of here but I went to UW for undergrad so that was my origional exposure to the city of Madison. I was out in Cleveland for dental school for a few years after that and then I did a residency in New York City. When I was looking to come back to Wisconsin, I really liked Madison from my time here as a student so I decided that this is where I wanted to be. It's still close enough to where I grew up in Wausau where the family is. I've been in the Madison area here for about 10 years practicing dentistry. I was at a few other locations before coming to Maple Grove Dental but a couple of years ago an opportunity opened up and there was a retiring dentist at this office. It just happened to be within eight minutes of where I lived and seemed like the perfect opportunity! 

Tell us about your practice!

I'm a general dentist so we are kind of the quarterback for your dental care. If you're looking for a dentist, give us a call, we'll get you in, do your exam, your x-rays, get you set up with your cleaning appointments and everything. If you have other needs outside of that, whether it's orthodontic treatments, gum treatments, oral surgery, root canals, endodontics, I have a very close-knit group of specialists that I work with in the area and I refer to them a lot for those procedures. We do a lot of things in house such as fillings, crowns, I do some Invisalign cases, some cosmetic cases. Being in the Madison area for 10 years I have a good team of specialists that I work with as well, so if you need things that are beyond what we provide at our office I have a good team to refer you to as well.

On a personal note, I haven't changed to an electric toothbrush yet . . . how important is that?

I love electric toothbrushes because they do a better job than a manual toothbrush (for most people). For a lot of us, a lot of patients may not understand how to angle the toothbrush to get all those areas to get all the plaque off the teeth. The electric toothbrush does most of the work for you, it's more about positioning it and putting it in the right spot. It's worth it! I look for something that's rechargeable, something that's got a two minute timer on it, something that has a pressure sensor on it so that you're not pressing too hard on your teeth. (Sometimes if they press too hard you may actually hurt your gum tissues.)

Other than your practice here in Fitchburg, what do you like to do in your free time?

I have a lot of kids in my house. I have three stepsons, two them are in college and then my third stepson is in middle school. Then I have a four-year old daughter. We also have two dogs! As you know, being in my neighborhood, you probably see us running around a lot chasing the kids, chasing the dogs. That takes up most of my time that I'm not at work. Other than that, I have played hockey since I was five years old so I still play in a men's league on Sunday nights. I wake up a little sore every Monday morning. I really enjoy the outdoors — everything that Wisconsin provides, I love the seasons, I love going hiking, country skiing, outdoor ice skating in the winter time. I love the seasons. It's always been home for me and it's always a really cool spot to be.
